more post-Katrina conversations

Mary Jo Wright Atterholt ( Richmond ), Executive Director of the Hopewell-Prince George Red Cross, writes: “The best way to help is for individuals to make a donation to either the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. The disaster is taxing all resources. I have heard a lot of criticism regarding the way our country has met the needs of those affected by the hurricane. First let me say that the people I am working with directly have been on call since August 31, 2205 , and last week at our small Red Cross Chapter, volunteers and staff put in between 60 and 85 hours. No one complained, people were helped, and progress is being made.”

Olga Hryndij Luciw ( Richmond ) writes that the hospital where she works also suggests giving to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Olga adds that HCA employees can help other HCA employees through their Human Resources department, as they did when Florida was hit hard by a hurricane. But when people wish to give more generally to help others in need, HCA directs them to the Red Cross.

Bob Blinn (NC) suggests that people “Google ‘Red Cross,’ The instructions for making donations are there.”

Meanwhile, Kate Douglass, daughter of classmates Charles Douglass ( Richmond ) and Phoebe Brooks ( Petersburg ), is fine. Classes have resumed at the University of Southern Mississippi , where she is teaching.

update

Ty Aron ( Richmond ): “I’ve been employed as a Clinical Perfusionist for 34 years at MCV-VCU. We are a select team that operates the heart-lung machine for open-heart surgery. We also work with other surgical services in the operating room assisting in organ transplantation and blood conservation techniques.”

TJ memories

Nick Brown (NC): “I remember the excellent faculty, particularly Margaret Gallaway, who egged me on to try out for a part in the Senior Class play, The Man Who Came to Dinner. I played the son and found I actually could deliver my lines. Quite the confidence builder, although the stage and I have never crossed paths since. I have fond memories of TJ and my classmates. I thoroughly enjoyed the 20th reunion and look forward to the 40th.”

Mike Thomas ( Richmond ): “Anyone remember Coach Carmack?”

You’ll be hear more of Nick’s memories and read about one of Mike’s baseball experiences with Coach Carmack in The Monticello forty65. Will your memories and reflections be part of our class book? We hope so, and there’s still time!
