tennis at Byrd Park

Judie Reed (NC) is one of several people who have mentioned Sam Woods recently. She writes that he had a great impact on her, adding that he was “such a special person, and he gave so much to all the kids who came [to Byrd Park ] to play tennis.”

Frisbee, anyone?

For Phil Pollack ( Midlothian ), Frisbee is the sport of choice. In fact, in 1986-87, he held the age 35-and-over world record (12.7 seconds) in the MTA event (maximum time aloft), in which you throw, run, and catch your throw cleanly (one hand), measuring time from throw to catch. He asks, “Any other Frisbee players out there?”  Let us know.

in the spotlight

From the West Coast, Rowena Hitt Moritz (Nellie Forbush in South Pacific) writes, “After not having sung for 25 years, I joined a performing choir two years ago, and it has given me such joy.”

Cary Jackson (Curly in Oklahoma ! and Emile in South Pacific) is appearing now through August 20 at the Swift Creek Mill Playhouse as Jimmy Burrhead in Hank Williams: Lost Highway. Cary says, “I hope some of my old school chums will come see it. If anyone does, please hang around afterwards and we can refresh our friendship.”

And in NYC, Cheryl Sporn Gross and her husband Bill recently sang at Carnegie Hall in a benefit concert with their choir, The New Yiddish Chorale. Check out the photo and details on our Reunion website.

other talents

By profession or hobby, we also have class cross-stitchers (Kathy Shapiro Wootton-AZ), potters (Bobbie Packer Greer-MD), poets (Jack Greer-MD), dulcimer players (Sally Talmage Kingsley-Urbanna), calligraphers (Bennie Ivey-Richmond), photographers (John Henley-Richmond), dancers (Myra “Bunny” Steinburg Daleng-Richmond), and portrait painters (Richard Alston-Richmond), to name but a few.

Classmates have been involved in the arts in other ways as well. Rita Savage Earl, for example, has been on the Richmond Symphony Guild and has been involved in fundraising for the Virginia Opera.

continue to let us know

  • about your involvement in the arts – and if you can send a poem or excerpt of a short story or novel, and/or a photograph of your art work (or of you “doing” your art), so much the better!
  • about joy in your life. What brought you joy when you were at TJ? What brings you joy these days?
  • about anything else on your mind as you  recall your high school days – and ponder the passing of forty years!
