more about the reunion committee

 the program committee

If you watched any girls’ sports back at TJ, you know Janie Huske Satterfield from hockey, basketball, and softball. You may also remember that in at least one Teacher-Tebahoes basketball game, she made an impressive, if unorthodox, foul shot, bouncing the ball off the floor into the basket.

Marilyn Lipsitz Flax, on the other hand, was not into sports – but believes she has edged out competition to win a 40th reunion “Senior Superlative” Award: Oldest First-Time Bride to Have a Huge Wedding (she was 51-1/2).  She is proudly preparing to receive her honor – but will relinquish the title gracefully if someone more qualified steps forward.

Betty Cox Thompson was in Homeroom 321.  Her homeroom teacher, Mrs. Saunders, had been her mother’s homeroom teacher as well – and kept “too much of an eye” on her, Betty says. Betty served on the Jeffersonian circulation staff and was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

Together, Janie, Marilyn, and Betty are the Program Committee working to make the weekend’s events run smoothly. They’ll be looking for volunteers to help set up, register, decorate, and so forth. Use the website to let them know if you (or your guest) would be willing to take a turn at something.

scholarships

Wayne Nystrom calls Speech the “most practical” class he had in high school – and he practiced his public speaking on us daily as a member of the Radio Committee, the group charged with making announcements over the P.A. system.

Bruce Baker recalls the “Hoagie Bowls” in then-rookie teacher Dennis O’Toole’s Government Class. He also remembers a night when he got 16 people into his car – a green and black ’51 or ’52 “tank.” Were you one of them?

Wayne and Bruce are handling scholarships for the weekend. We want to keep costs down, but travel, accommodations, and meals can add up. If you or some classmates you know hesitate to attend because of the expense, please contact Wayne or Bruce. (Click on the Reunion Committee Members link on the website for their phone and email information.)

20th reunion committee veterans

Larry Creeger remembers pulling a classmate’s ponytail in the hall between classes – and getting the string to her halter top along with it. Yep, her top toppled – but he swears he saw nothing except a fist coming at his face when she turned to punch him.

Ned Hood was active in TJ’s Cadet Corps. Unrelated to that, however, are his amazing chocolate milkshake stories. Remember circling Shoney’s – and then peeling out onto Broad Street ? Ask him what happened one time with the milkshake.

Ned and Larry, along with Marilyn and Janie, were on our 20th reunion committee. If you know – or heard – how great that weekend was, you’ll know you can count on them to make our 40th reunion great as well.

Do you remember

  • What the Tebahoes were - and where the name came from?
  • What, exactly, the Jeffersonian circulation staff did?
  • What signal was used to begin the morning announcements each day?

Be in touch. Let us know.
